Tom Atkin
Coast Guard Rear Admiral.
Tom Atkin is a retired U.S. Coast Guard Rear Admiral. During his Coast Guard career of more than 30 years, he served various operational and strategic roles focused on maritime security, counter-narcotics, counter-terrorism, and law enforcement. In addition to his experience with the Coast Guard, Tom has significant experience serving in senior leadership roles at the White House National Security Council, Department of Defense, Department of Homeland Security, Federal Emergency Management Agency, and U.S. Navy.
After the Coast Guard, Tom was a Director for Raytheon, U.S. Homeland Security. In this capacity, he was responsible for linking technological, engineering and service solutions to maritime, border, public safety and other security-related requirements in the domestic and international market.
In his most recent government position, Tom was the Acting Assistant Secretary of Defense for Homeland Defense and Global Security. He was responsible for Department of Defense strategy and policy on cyber, countering weapons of mass destruction, space, homeland defense, domestic antiterrorism, global force protection, continuity of government, mission assurance, critical infrastructure, defense support to civil authorities, border security, and technology/equipment transfers to domestic agencies.
Tom founded and leads The Atkin Group, a consulting firm that provides strategic and operational advice on cyber, intelligence, maritime security, crisis management, incident response, and exercise management. Additionally, The Atkin Group provides mentoring, executive coaching and leadership development training for individuals, teams and organizations.
