Rear Admiral Richard V. Timme

Rear Admiral Richard Timme serves as the Commander, Eighth Coast Guard District and is responsible for Coast Guard operations spanning 26 states, including the Gulf of Mexico coastline from the Florida panhandle to our nation’s border with Mexico, the adjacent offshore waters and outer continental shelf, and the inland waterways of the Mississippi, Ohio, Missouri, Illinois and Tennessee River systems.

His previous Flag assignment was as the Assistant Commandant for Prevention Policy where he was responsible for the development of national policy, standards, and programs for waterways management, navigation and boating safety, ports and facilities, merchant mariner credentialing, marine casualty investigation, commercial vessel inspections, and port state control.

​

His operational experience includes serving as Commander of Coast Guard Sector Ohio Valley, as well as the Commanding Officer of Marine Safety Unit Pittsburgh. During the 2010 DEEPWATER HORIZON oil spill response, he served as a Deputy Incident Commander and Federal On-Scene Coordinator Representative in Mobile, AL. Other field assignments include Marine Safety Office Tampa; Marine Safety Office Portland, ME; Resident Inspection Office St. Croix, USVI; and Marine Safety Office New Orleans. He also served as a Deck Watch Officer on the Coast Guard Cutter MELLON.

His staff assignments include tours at the Coast Guard Headquarters Office of Budget and Programs as both the Office Chief, and as a program reviewer, and at the Department of Justice’s El Paso Intelligence Center.

Rear Admiral Timme served as a Secretary of Defense Executive Fellow, and holds master degrees from the National War College in National Security Strategy and from the George Washington University in Public Administration. He is a 1991 graduate of the United States Coast Guard Academy where he received a Bachelor of Science in Government. He is a Coast Guard Type 1 Incident Commander.

A Connecticut native, his awards include the Legion of Merit, Meritorious Service Medal, Coast Guard Commendation Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Coast Guard Achievement Medal, Commandant’s Letter of Commendation Ribbon, and various unit awards.
